The MMO strip anode (Mixed Metal Oxide Anode) is an industrial strip anode with a titanium substrate (such as ASTM B265 Grade 1 titanium) coated with precious metal oxides (such as IrO₂/Ta₂O₅ mixed oxides) on its surface. The coating thickness is typically ≥2 μm, and it exhibits high electrocatalytic activity. The oxide coating exhibits low polarization and a low consumption rate. By adjusting the composition of the oxide layer, it can be adapted to various environments, such as seawater, freshwater, and soil media.
Strip-shaped precious metal oxide anodes are used in cathodic protection systems for the bottom plates of newly constructed storage tanks. MMO strip anodes exhibit low consumption rates in various cathodic protection environments, typically ranging from 1 to 6 mg/A·a, and have a long design life. They possess high chemical stability, remaining stable even in low pH and chloride-containing environments; they are dimensionally stable; their coating consumption is low and uniform; they can operate at higher current densities; and they have good electrical conductivity.
Common specifications include a width of 6.35 mm, a thickness of 0.635 mm, a standard coil length of 152 meters, and an output current of 17–86 mA/m (depending on specifications). Another specification is 12.7 mm wide × 0.9 mm thick. [1] During installation, MMO strip anodes are typically laid perpendicular to titanium conductive strips and cross-welded to form a grid-like anode network. When laid along pipelines, the connection intervals generally do not exceed 305 meters, and backfill materials such as gypsum powder must be used to optimize current distribution.
The standard specifications for MMO strip anodes are 6.35 mm in width and 0.635 mm in thickness, with standard lengths of 152 meters per roll or 76.2 meters per roll. Another specification features a width of 12.7 mm, a thickness of 0.9 mm, and a length of 152 meters per roll. The standard specifications have output currents of 17 mA/m and 43 mA/m, while the other specification has output currents of 34 mA/m and 86 mA/m.
The design life of MMO strip anodes can reach 30 or 50 years.
The coating is primarily a mixed metal oxide coating, such as the iridium-tantalum coating (IrO₂/Ta₂O₅) suitable for soil environments and the ruthenium-iridium coating suitable for seawater environments. The coating thickness is typically greater than 2 micrometers.
The substrate uses GR1/GR2 titanium or ASTM B265 Grade 1 titanium strip.

High chemical stability, even in low pH and chloride-containing environments; dimensional stability; low and uniform coating consumption rate: 1–6 mg/A·a; capable of operating at high current densities; excellent electrical conductivity. It has a long design life of up to 30 years, with some specifications reaching 50 years; anode products vary with the environment, primarily releasing chlorine gas (Cl₂) in seawater and oxygen (O₂) or chlorine gas (Cl₂) in soil or freshwater environments.
MMO strip anodes are primarily used in cathodic protection systems. Application areas include cathodic protection for the bottoms of above-ground storage tanks and pipelines, corrosion protection for reinforced concrete structures such as road surfaces and bridges, marine facilities (e.g., ships, offshore platforms), dam gates, water treatment facilities, underground pipelines, and storage tanks.
Seawater: Anode products are primarily Cl₂; In soil and freshwater, the primary anode products are O₂ or Cl₂ or both.

MMO strip anodes are interdependent with backfill material; the use of backfill material optimizes current distribution and extends anode life. MMO strip anodes are laid perpendicular to titanium conductive strips and cross-welded to form a grid-like anode network, with connection points joined using specialized anode connectors.
To reduce ground resistance, MMO strip anodes are laid along the structure of the protected equipment. [6] When strip anodes are laid along pipelines, they should be connected to the pipeline at regular intervals, and these intervals should not be too large. This is because, over time, the anodes will gradually be consumed, causing the resistance of the anode strip to increase; therefore, the spacing between strip anodes should preferably not exceed 305 meters.
MMO strip anodes are suitable for cathodic protection of underground storage tank bases and pipelines, corrosion prevention of reinforced concrete structures in road and bridge applications, and marine facilities. In storage tank protection, they are typically buried in the sand bedding at the base; during pipeline installation, they must be backfilled with gypsum powder to reduce resistance.
Backfill materials such as gypsum powder or coke powder should be used, as they can absorb moisture, optimize current distribution, and extend the anode’s service life.

When selecting MMO strip anodes, key parameters must be considered, including standard specifications such as 6.35 mm wide, 0.635 mm thick, and 152-meter rolls, as well as 12.7 mm wide, 0.9 mm thick, and 152-meter rolls. Output current parameters include 17 mA/m, 43 mA/m, 34 mA/m,
